In 1778 Thomas Cayley married Sarah Pay in Thanet, Kent. They had at least four children:

  • Sarah Cayley (b. 1789 in Margate, Kent; d. in Thanet in 1873), who worked as a straw bonnet maker and spent her last years in an almshouse owned by the Drapers Company

  • Mercy Cayley (b. 1791 in Margate)

  • Thomas Cayley (b. 1793 in Margate, d. 1861 or later), who was a baker in Walmer, Kent, and who in 1821 married Elizabeth Hogbin (c.1798 - bef. 1861)

  • Isaac Pay Cayley (baptised 1795 in Margate, d. in Newington, London in 1853, buried at St Peter Walworth, Southwark), who became a London schoolmaster and who married Elizabeth Hobbs in 1824

Isaac Pay Cayley and Elizabeth Hobbs had at least six children:

  • Richard Grant Cayley (b. 1827 in London)

  • Thomas Cayley (b. 1829 in London)

  • Alexander Benskin Cayley (b. c.1833 in London, d. 1881 in Camberwell), who worked as a newspaper reporter and later owned a shop, and who married at least twice. He married Amelia Nicholson in 1856: they had at least one child, Alexander Benskin Cayley, baptised in Canonbury London in 1857. His second or third wife was Jane King, whom he married in 1864. Another of his children, Sarah Benskin Charlotte Elizabeth Cayley (b. 1849 in Newington, d. 1854) may have been the product of an earlier marriage.
