The Cayley crest

A Stanwell family

In the 19th and 20th centuries there were Cayleys living in the Stanwell and Staines area of Middlesex, England, to the West of London. What follows is an attempt to recreate a family tree. There are a number of Cayleys associated with this part of Middlesex whom I have not yet been able to link to particular families, and I would welcome any additional information.

The earliest ancestor I have traced is James Caley (b. c.1796, d. at Stanwell in 1833), who, at Isleworth, Middlesex in 1820, married Hannah Batten (b. 1796 in Shepperton, Middlesex; d. 1871 in Stanwell). In 1854 Hannah married again, her second husband being William Holt. James and Hannah had at least five children:

  • James Caley (b. c.1824 in Stanwell, d. 1888 in Chertsey, Surrey)

  • Ellen Caley (b. c.1826 in Stanwell)

  • Thomas Caley (b. c.1837 in Stanwell, d. 1918 in Staines), an agricultural labourer whose name is recorded as Thomas Cayley in censuses. In 1859 Thomas married Sarah Carrad (b. c.1839 in Stanwell, d. 1916 in Staines) at Stanwell
